My Journey to Coaching the Shot Put and Discus

Justin Withers, former D1 thrower at Stephen F. Austin State University with over 20 years’ experience coaching shot put and discus.

After a childhood of baseball, an injury at 15 forced me to shift sports. Throwing Shot Put and Discus quickly became a lifelong passion. One thing you’ll hear me say often is, “Summation of Forces.” The combination of never being the biggest and getting a late start on weight training meant success was not going to come easy. Watching and repeating wouldn’t be enough. I had to do more than just learn how to throw. I had to become a student of movement and understand the cause and effect of balance and speed.

We will spend a lot of time talking through technique and working back to the root cause of why the shot put or discus went a certain direction, angle, or speed. My goal is for athletes to become aware and critical of where their own technical success comes from and be able to make adjustments away from our workouts when throwing at practice or on their own.

Not being the biggest thrower drove me to learn in a different way and gave me the ability to talk through and analyze technique, which prepared me for something I never thought about at the time, coaching. I look forward to getting started as your shot put and discus coach soon!
